Kay has been a professional researcher and consultant in the not-for-profit sector for twenty-eight years.
Since 1978 she has been actively involved in research, designing donor and prospect database systems, initiating training programmes, setting up research departments and donor development programmes for some of the largest organisations in the not-for-profit sector, including educational establishments.
Kay was made a Fellow of the Institute of Fundraising in 1994. She was also Founder of the Institute of Fundraising Research Training Days and lectured at the following conferences and conventions: International Fundraising Workshops Amsterdam, Institute of Fundraising National Fundraising Conventions, Institute of Fundraising Foundation courses, Institute of Fundraising Trust seminars, Charity Forum and The National Arts Fundraising School. She was a BBC World Service Speaker on programmes for and about charities.
Kay began her career in fundraising research at Charities Aid Foundation, where her work as Information Officer and Researcher involved compiling and researching the statistics for the Annual Charity Statistics Review, now known as Dimensions of the Voluntary Sector. From 1980 to 1992 she worked for Redmond Mullin, where she ran the Fundraising Research Department, ultimately becoming a Director of Redmond Mullin Ltd and Managing Director of Anderida Research.
In June 1992, she joined the Chapter One Group as Managing Director of the Fundraising Research Centre and Director of Research Services and Donor Development. At Chapter One she designed and developed the Major Donor Development Programme for UK organisations. She has also established an expert and dedicated research team capable of identifying clients’ research needs and developing “cutting edge” products and services.
Fundraising Research & Consultancy bought the research and consultancy division from Chapter One in 1996. Since that time, Kay (a Director and co-owner) and her team have continued to provide top of the range fundraising and research solutions to clients across a range of fields.
During her career, Kay has founded, compiled and edited The Charity Press Digest and Donor Digest and was the author of The Charity Research Manual.
Kay is passionate about fundraising research and believes that there are still huge income opportunities, especially with major donors, available for many of the not-for-profits in the United Kingdom and Europe.
