Roger Mitty has been a professional fundraiser for thirty years.
Following ten years in management with a major international publisher, he joined the charity Help the Aged in 1976. During his career with Help the Aged, he conducted and managed a whole range of fundraising activities including special events, corporate and trusts fundraising, direct response fundraising, cause related marketing, legacies and sponsorship. He was also seconded by Help the Aged to several welfare organisations in South Africa where he set up successful fundraising operations for a number of causes and advised on a capital campaign to raise funds for a Chair in Gerontology at Wittwatersrand University.
Roger was appointed Head of Help the Aged’s marketing group in 1983 with responsibility for the charity’s income from direct mail, press appeals, Adopt a Granny sponsorship, legacies trusts and foundations and corporate sponsorships. His training in fundraising included visits to North America. At that time the income from these sources was around £10 million per annum.
Roger joined Chapter One Group as Director of Fundraising Services in 1986, responsible for the management and development of all Fundraising Services staff. He was also responsible for the resourcing of clients’ needs and the quality of client servicing.
Since he and Kay bought out the fundraising consultancy division of Chapter One Group in 1996, creating Fundraising Research & Consultancy, he has continued his involvement in “hands on” consulting for a number of clients. He regularly provides major input to strategic planning across a whole range of services including capital fundraising, direct mail, legacy marketing, strategic planning and development, corporate fundraising, organisational development, fundraising audits and staff selection and training.
Over the last eighteen years Roger has attended and run courses for the Institute of Fundraising, Directory of Social Change and external consultants covering his numerous areas of experience and expertise.
Roger is a Member of the Institute of Fundraisers and a Member of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. He is frequently invited to speak at the Institute of Fundraising convention; the International Fundraising Workshop in Holland and at fundraising conventions in the UK, USA and South Africa.
During his career in fundraising, Roger has regularly worked directly with major corporate leaders, individuals of significant wealth and influence and members of the Royal family.
In a voluntary capacity, Roger has also set up a Trust to provide educational resources for a school and is a Trustee and Board Member of Mission Aviation Fellowship.
